City Desk

Definition:

 

Assist editors and reporters with the daily functions of the City Desk.

Key Duties:

 

  • Prepare morning report; research and update happenings from overnight for possible pursuit.

  • Assist with research and data gathering; take feeds from reporters in the field 

  • First gatherers of information for all breaking news: includes monitoring the police scanner, first-responder tweets and websites, contacting first-responders, hospitals, victims' families, etc. for original content

  • Report and write news briefs for the paper and BostonGlobe.com

  • Interact with the public: screen news tips; answer queries related to Metro section

  • Office duties: support coop supervisor by distributing newspapers and mail, sorting press releases and faxes, copying material etc.

  • Additional tasks as directed by supervisor, reporters, and editors

Key Duties:

 
  • Download all incoming emailed photos to Photo Desk and AOL accounts; process images and attach caption and credit data to each image; add to Merlin database
  • Distribute courtesy photos to media outlets

Department Description:
The Accounts Payable department works closely with Finance in processing Invoices, auditing employee expenses, and processing payroll.   This co-op will have exposure to day to day functions in Accounting and Finance and experience how the departments function in a large company.  The co-op will have the ability to demonstrate clerical, accounting, and mathematical abilities as well as interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities:
-Assist in data entry of vendor information in the company's financial system
-Administrative duties including: scanning invoices, documenting expense reports, and reporting in Excel, and filing
-Assistance in the daily audit and analyzing of employee expense reports, making sure they are abiding to company policy

Position Mission: 
This co-op will work in our Digital Advertising operations department working closely with our Design and Sales teams to build revenue through digital advertisements.  This co-op will work with the pre and post advertising sales process including order entry, reporting, and creative testing.  They will be the "go to" person for the department to assist on projects on an as-needed basis.  A strong potential candidate will be accountable, able to multi-task, and work well with others.

Responsibilities:
-Managing incoming insertion (details of the advertising purchase) through internal Sales Order System (SOS)
-Pulling advertising campaign reports on an ad-hoc basis (OAS)
-Conducting analysis on campaign performance for internal and external customers
-QA & Test advertising creative's before they go live across all browsers
-Providing ad-hoc support to the Ad ops team
-Pull 3rd Party Discrepancy Report on Monday's for the Traffic Team
-Pull monthly reports for Campaign Managers
-Update internal calendars and media kits

This co-op will assist BGM experiential in brainstorming and producing unique, nationwide experiential programs. This includes events, guerilla marketing campaigns, etc.  

Responsibilities include:
-Brainstorm new and unique ideas to pitch to clients
-Support Director and Account Managers on day to day needs
-Assist in editing and putting together decks to send to clients
-Conduct research on upcoming projects
-Work with cities nationwide on permitting for programs
-Communicate directly with clients on details for programs
-Attend local, and possibly national, events to ensure the success of the event  

Requirements:
-Must have valid drivers license and feel comfortable driving to and from events throughout the Boston area
-Must be able to work weekends and overtime if needed
-Must be able to manage time and priorities with minimal supervision

Help the Community Affairs and Communications Office of The Boston Globe with events, media coverage and internal communications, with the goal of strengthening the Globe's position in the community.  This co-op will work closely with management in various departments of the Globe, which provides a well-rounded experience, giving the student a full understanding of all that Boston Globe Media Partner encompasses.

Responsibilities:

Community Affairs:

Globe Foundation
-Assist Globe Foundation President with various tasks related to signature programs, specifically the Globe's longest-standing charitable giving program, Globe Santa.
-Think creatively about ways the Foundation can engage with the community in new ways

Community Outreach
-Help communications team and project manager with tours of the Globe for external groups, using existing script and tour guidelines.
-Help Communications team identify and manage submissions for awards and speaking opportunities.


Communications

Public Relations
-Work with communications team to coordinate media appearances, including coordination of broadcast shoots in the Globe building.
-Help develop and execute PR strategy across multiple platforms, for multiple audiences.
-Help Communications Office team push out social media messages and develop ongoing relationships with reporters, industry analysts, bloggers, and other influencers.
-Work with Communications team to ensure a steady flow of pitches and briefings

Internal Communications
-Help Communications team with internal messaging – posting messages on the internal Compass website, internal video screens, flyers, posters, etc.  and staffing tables at internal Globe events.
-Work with Communications team to develop story ideas and write articles for the internal compass website.

Advertising and Marketing

Events
-Help with logistics and staffing when needed to manage external events and programming. Duties may include transporting marketing materials to the event site, helping with set-up and break-down and staffing tables.

Finance
-Help communications team process and track payments made to vendors for public relations services and events.

As a co-op in the Brand Marketing Department, you will touch multiple media platforms and departments within the company.  This co-op will help the marketing department's mission of putting the customer's needs first while continually communication the value of the company.  This co-op will work on a variety of projects and administrative duties with a primary focus on brand and direct marketing products.

 Responsibilities:
-Event Support (Radio BDC events, "Let's talk about Food", the events depend on the cycle)

This co-op will work in support of creative for advertising and marketing clients across all of Boston Globe Media's diverse publications and products.  As part of the BGM Creative team you will directly impact the marketing of The Boston Globe and Boston.com brands as well as a diverse array of advertisers. At the end of this 6 -month assignment, you will possess a strong working knowledge of the creative and operational aspects of an in-house agency.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute designs for online and print advertising
  • Production support to designers and developers, including image research, file preparation, and basic web design
  • Assist in the redesign and update of our internal portfolio site
  • Provide organizational support to the creative department

Department Description:
This department is focused on the retention and acquisition of our product subscriptions.  The work you will be doing will be directly related to gaining new subscribers. This department also focuses on heavy reporting based on incoming data.  An interest in marketing is preferred.

Responsibilities:
-Create and maintain yearly invoice tracking spreadsheet
-Create and maintain testing spreadsheet to track all e-mail tests and results
-Maintain our internal Wiki site by updating on a weekly basis
-Provide informational tours of the building
-Assist any consumer marketing managers in creating and deploying new marketing alerts
-Create and maintain binder of e-mail creative organized by month and campaign
-Keep co-op binder up-to-date throughout term; remove any unnecessary information and add any additional tasks
-Assist in maintaining the general Marketing Calendar

This co-op will work closely with the team to help further the web analytics department's mission of providing insight about the online behavior of visitors to BostonGlobe.com and Boston.com.  The ideal student will have a passion for new media, with a strong desire to continually dig into data and the confidence to work in a fast paced environment.  While assisting the web analytics team, the co-op will work on a variety of projects and administrative duties with a primary focus on ad hoc data requests from across the organization. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with ongoing reporting: Design and deliver weekly/monthly reports – audience profiles, performance dashboards and provide guidance to aid decision making for functional teams (Product, Editorial, Sales).  Reporting includes web, mobile, competitor, streaming radio and video analysis
  • Answer ad hoc requests: Respond to ad hoc website data requests from various departments
  • Assist with website QA: Work with analytics team to evaluate placement of tags on the websites and QA and management of site tags and new site tagging implementation
  • Provide back-up for other support staff as needed

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment and handle requests and competing priorities in an effective manner
  • Knowledge of and interest in new media platforms such as social media, iPad/iPhone apps, video, and streaming radio
  • Able to think analytically and evaluate large amounts of data

Position Description:
This co-op will assist the Advertising Events department in producing their ambitious calendar of events designed to elevate the Boston Globe brand and increase review and foster a connection with the community. Estimated 60 events!

Responsibilities:
-Plan, track, staff and wrap-up Advertiser events
-Communicate directly with clients to coordinate events
-Manager 60 events over a 6 month period
-Create marketing materials for events
-Manage the events e-mail inbox

-Must be able to work weekends and overtime

Department Description:
As the HR department grows and innovates under our new ownership, we are charged with bringing all systems, benefits, etc. to our employee population.  It is an exciting time for us as we re-design processes, procedures, and new opportunities into our existing culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Support HR teams on existing projects
  • Conduct new hire orientations
  • Support and manage recruiting initiatives
  • Work with team on re-writing policies to lead growth within the organization
  • Maintain and troubleshoot data in HR/Payroll system
  • Document new processes
  • Participate on a team to innovate systems

Desired Skills:

  • Organized and ability to multitask 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite: Payroll systems experience preferred but not necessary
  • Flexibility: ability to switch projects based on business needs

Department Description:
The Payroll department handles the important function of processes each pay cycle's checks and ensures employees are paid accurately.    Working with all departments in the company, payroll is a fast-paced, customer service, and data driven office.  Working in the Payroll department will give a co-op exposure to weekly reporting, time and attendance software, and the company payroll system, ADP.  The co-op will have the ability to demonstrate clerical, accounting, and mathematical abilities as well as interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities:
-Assist in data entry in the ADP Payroll System and Enterprise Time and Attendance system for weekly and bi-weekly payrolls for union and non-union employees. 
-Organize and distribute employee paychecks
-Assist in handling daily deposit logs and deposits sent to the bank
-Work on any long-term and short-term projects as they arise
-Provide back-up for other payroll support staff as needed
-Handle and organize confidential employee records
-Handle administrative tasks including filing, scanning, and faxing

Position Description:
This co-op will be part of a development team that works on one of the largest regional sites in the country, Boston.com along with BostonGlobe.com.   You will work in a mature web development team learning coding best practices and modern project management.  A passion for new technologies and a drive to find better ways to produce interactive online content is key!

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with senior developers on maintenance tasks, including managing incoming tickets to resolve issues
  • Remove and add content to Boston.com and BostonGlobe.com
  • Using your expertise in HTML, CSS, JSTL and Javascript to create the end user experience.

Desired Skills:

  • Must be proficient with HTML, CSS and Javascript
  • Any experience with the following would be helpful: XML, JSON, RESTful development, jQuery (or other Javascript frameworks), PHP (or other scripting language such as Ruby or Python), Java
  • Must be studying a bachelors or graduate degree in Computer Science

BGM Creative is a dynamic in-house agency packed with creative talent in all media. We produce campaigns for Boston Globe Media advertisers, supporting a huge diversity of brands and businesses. We also create integrated marketing campaigns promoting all Boston Globe and Boston.com products and brands. Being able to see the world differently is a good thing. We offer a lot of opportunities to learn and meet people as well as find and develop your aesthetic.

Responsibilities:
-Work with clients to create branded digital media and video that engages audience
-Produce, design and edit video, graphics and small animations
-In studio/ on location video and photo assignment

Desired Skills:
-Familiarity with DSLR cameras and DSLR photography
-Basic knowledge of After Effects and Final Cut required
-Video editing experience
-Film and photography background
-Creative, self-motivated, and thoughtful. 
-Able to work independently, as well as collaboratively with team members and clients.
